Every offseason gets called the busiest in memory. This one has a decent case.
Milwaukee traded Giannis Antetokounmpo to Miami for four players, four first-round picks and a pick swap. Write that sentence out and it still does not quite land. The Bucks got the kind of return that front offices spend a decade insisting they would demand for a two-time MVP, and it will take most of that decade to know whether it was enough. Miami, meanwhile, has stopped pretending it is building toward anything. It is built.
Then Philadelphia paired LeBron James with Jaylen Brown, which is the sort of move that would have carried a whole summer on its own in most years and this year has to share the page.
The rest of the reshuffle
Kawhi Leonard is going back to Toronto after six seasons with the Clippers, a return that carries more weight than most because of how the first stint ended. Ja Morant is a Trail Blazer, moving from Memphis to a Portland roster that suddenly has a very different ceiling. LaMelo Ball went from Charlotte to Minnesota.
Free agency kept pace. James Harden and Cleveland agreed on three years and 97 million dollars. DeMar DeRozan is in Denver. Klay Thompson is reportedly heading to Miami after a buyout in Dallas, which would put him alongside Antetokounmpo, and Draymond Green is staying in Golden State on a one-year deal worth 27.7 million.
What it actually means
Roster churn on this scale usually produces one thing before it produces winning, and that thing is a chemistry problem. Miami has to work out how a Giannis offense and a Thompson offense share a floor. Philadelphia has to answer a question about touches that no whiteboard has ever solved cleanly. Portland has handed the keys to a guard whose best basketball has always come with a health caveat attached.
The teams best placed in October may well be the ones that did the least. Nobody will be talking about them in September.
