Newcastle United is said to be interested in securing the services of Barcelona star forward Ousmane Dembele. Reports indicate that brief contact was made between the Magpies and the player’s representatives during Dembele’s visit to the UK in March.
Dembele’s career at Barcelona has been marred by injuries and inconsistency, preventing the Frenchman from fully realizing his potential. Although his contract was renewed until 2024, several clubs are keen on signing the forward. Newcastle is among those interested, as they look to bolster their squad for the upcoming season.
The 25-year-old traveled to the UK to attend a Sunderland game against Sheffield United in March, where he visited his friend Kyril Louis-Dreyfus, Sunderland’s chairman. During this trip, Newcastle reportedly made contact with Dembele’s entourage to express their interest.
Despite the interest from various clubs, a move away from Barcelona seems unlikely for the time being. Dembele enjoys a good relationship with the club’s management and is reportedly leaning towards extending his contract. Xavi, Barcelona’s head coach, and the rest of the team are said to be extremely fond of the player.
Dembele’s current contract contains two release clauses: a €100 million clause valid in April, May, and June, and a €50 million clause valid during the summer transfer window in July and August. Barcelona is expected to negotiate a new contract with the forward, offering a higher salary and a larger release clause.
Other Premier League clubs, including Arsenal, Chelsea, and Manchester City, are also reportedly keeping tabs on Dembele’s situation at Camp Nou.
