Bukayo Saka, Arsenal’s forward, took to social media to apologize to fans for his penalty miss during Sunday’s 2-2 draw against West Ham United. The missed opportunity impacted the Gunners’ title hopes and left fans frustrated.
Arsenal initially appeared in control of the match, with Martin Odegaard and Gabriel Jesus scoring within the first 10 minutes. However, West Ham managed to fight back, thanks to goals from Said Benrahma and Jarrod Bowen, and left Arsenal ruing their lost lead.
Saka’s penalty miss occurred in the second half of the game, after Michail Antonio handled the ball in his own penalty area. The young forward, who has been in top form this season with 12 goals and 10 assists in the league, sent the spot-kick wide of the post.
In response to the miss, Saka wrote on his personal Instagram account, “Regardless of the outcome, I’ll always accept my responsibility. Apologies Gunners, I’ll do everything I can to make it right.”
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta defended Saka, telling Sky Sports, “A player who takes penalties misses penalties, I don’t know anyone who hasn’t.”
The draw has left Arsenal just four points ahead of Manchester City, who are in excellent form and have a game in hand. Additionally, City will have home advantage in the upcoming top-of-the-table clash between the two sides.
Arsenal now needs to regroup and focus on their upcoming match against Southampton, the bottom side in the league. The Gunners will be eager to secure a win in their bid to stay ahead of Manchester City in the title race.
While Saka’s missed penalty has undoubtedly cost Arsenal valuable points, his overall performance this season has been stellar. Fans and teammates alike will be hoping he can bounce back and continue to contribute to the team’s success.
