SEOUL – In a groundbreaking collaboration, the National Basketball Association (NBA) and BIGHIT MUSIC, the powerhouse music label behind global sensations BTS, have announced that BTS star and South Korean rapper, songwriter, and producer SUGA has been appointed as the NBA Ambassador.
As the newly-minted NBA Ambassador, SUGA will utilize his global appeal to connect with NBA fans worldwide throughout the remainder of the 2022-23 season and beyond. SUGA, a self-proclaimed NBA enthusiast, will partake in various league initiatives featured across the NBA’s and his personal social media channels. These initiatives include attending NBA games and events in the U.S. and Asia and participating in the league’s promotional activities.
The partnership extends beyond the court, with the NBA making its presence felt during SUGA’s first solo world tour in celebration of his debut solo album, D-DAY. SUGA’s affinity for basketball is evident in several of BTS’ projects, most notably in the music video for the group’s 2020 chart-topping hit “Dynamite.”
SUGA expressed his excitement about the partnership, stating, “Music and basketball have been shared passions of mine since my youth, and it’s a dream to be named an NBA Ambassador. I’m excited to formalize my relationship with the NBA, and I can’t wait to share some exciting collaborations I have planned with the league over the coming months.”
NBA Deputy Commissioner and Chief Operating Officer Mark Tatum shared his enthusiasm for the collaboration, saying, “We’re thrilled to join forces with SUGA – a superstar musician, fashion icon, and passionate NBA fan. We look forward to working with SUGA to bring the same excitement he engenders from his global fanbase in support of our continued efforts to grow our brand.”
SUGA’s love for the NBA has been on display since his attendance at The NBA Japan Games 2022 Presented by Rakuten & Nissan last September. The event featured the reigning NBA champion Golden State Warriors and the Washington Wizards playing two preseason games. SUGA sat courtside and shared behind-the-scenes social media content, including meet-and-greets with NBA players and legends. He also attended the Dallas Mavericks vs. Los Angeles Lakers game on January 12th.
This innovative partnership unites the world of sports and music, leveraging the global influence of BTS and the NBA to captivate fans and create an unforgettable experience.
