The Philadelphia Flyers are a very tricky team to figure out. They had a 10-game winning streak at one point last season and the Flyers failed to make the playoffs. Fans were calling for Claude Giroux to be traded and that is probably one of the reasons why Philadelphia drafted Nolan Patrick with the second overall pick. Patrick will probably become the next captain of the Flyers one day.
But for right now, it still belongs to Claude Giroux. It seems like he doesn’t elevate his teammates and lacks a vocal voice. Dave Hakstol is a good and energetic coach, but they aren’t on the level of the Pittsburgh Penguins, Washington Capitals, and/or Columbus Blue Jackets yet.
Projected lines: Line 1: Travis Konecny-Claude Giroux-Jakub Voracek
Line 2: Valtteri Flippula-Nolan Patrick-Wayne Simmonds
Line 3: Michael Raffl-Sean Couturier-Matt Read
Line 4: Jordan Weal-Jori Lehtera-Dale Weise
Defense 1: Ivan Provorov-Andrew MacDonald
Defense 2: Brandon Manning-Shayne Gostibehere
Defense 3: Travis Sanheim-Radko Gudas
Brian Elliott will be the starting goalie. Michal Neuvirth will be the backup. I think at some point this season, the Flyers will be frustrated with both and Anthony Stolarz will become the starter.
Expect these players to step up in case of injury: Scott Laughton, Oskar Lindblom, German Rubtsov, Nicolas Aube-Kubel, Samuel Morin, TJ Brennan, and Anthony Stolarz.
Philadelphia still has some young and upcoming players in either the AHL or juniors for 2017-2018. They will be a legit contender in a year or so but for right now, Philadelphia is at best a second wild card team in the Eastern Conference or just missing the playoffs.
