The Pittsburgh Penguins have finally decided to call up forward Daniel Sprong from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (AHL). They have also called down Dominik Simon to the minors.
Sprong has scored 18 goals and recorded 10 assists in 29 AHL games so far this season. His plus/minus is -2. Sprong scored a hat trick and recorded an assist last night as well in a 5-1 win against the Hartford Wolf Pack. Sprong was a second-round pick in the 2015 NHL Draft. He is only 20 years and Sprong could be a star at the NHL level. Sprong did play in 18 games for the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 2015-2016 season and he scored two goals. His plus/minus was -1. Sprong was sent back to the Charlottetown Islanders (QMJHL) that year.
Sprong will most likely spark a struggling Penguins offense. Pittsburgh doesn’t have the scoring depth this season like they did last year. Pittsburgh has scored 110 goals in 39 games this season. The Penguins record is 17-4-2 this season when they score three or more goals in a game. They are 2-13-1 this season when they score two goals or less in a game. Pittsburgh has only been shutout once this season.
The Sprong experiment will most likely begin tomorrow against the Detroit Red Wings on the road. It will be interesting on what line head coach Mike Sullivan puts him on.
