New York Mets Should Be All In on Manny Machado

Baltimore Orioles third baseman Manny Machado is one of the best players in the MLB. He is 25 years old and will be an unrestricted free-agent after next season. The problem is the Orioles will most likely not be able to resign him, making it likely the team trades him instead of losing him for nothing.

Teams like the New York Yankees and the Philadelphia Phillies are the favorites to land Manny Machado. The last thing the New York Mets want is that to happen. If the Mets let that happen, they will never get close to winning a World Series Championship and continue to be the circus clowns they are now.

The Mets could sign him long term and give him a big contract. They need another bat in the lineup. This would also help Michael Conforto, Amed Rosario, and Yoenis Cespedes. Machado’s batting average this season is .271 with 32 homeruns and 91 RBI’s, along with 9 stolen bases. He is a gold glover and the Mets infield defense has been shaky all year.

Mike Moustakas’s name has also been mentioned when it comes to the Mets possibly signing him in the offseason. He is 28 years old and has won a World Series, but Moustakas doesn’t have the same pop Machado offers. Although, the Mets wouldn’t have to give away any prospects, but then again the Mets should do everything in order to make sure Machado doesn’t go to the Yankees or Phillies.

The Mets should trade pitcher Zack Wheeler, prospect outfielder Desmond Lindsay, prospect third baseman Jhoan Urena, and pitching prospect Corey Oswalt.

Lindsay is ranked seventh on the Mets current top 30 prospects list. He is projected to reach the major leagues in 2019. In 65 games this season with the Columbia Fireflies (A), his batting average was .220 with 8 homeruns and 30 RBI’s, with 4 stolen bases. Lindsay has the potential to develop power and is a very good defensive outfielder.

Urena is ranked 17th on the Mets top 30 prospects list. He is projected to reach the majors in 2019, but could sooner because of his promotion to Triple-A Las Vegas late in the year. Urena only played in 13 games there, but played in 122 with Port. St. Luice (High-A). His batting average was .277 with 14 homeruns and 70 RBI’s, along with 18 stolen bases. Urena is speedy along the base paths and has some range on defense. There is probably a reason why he skipped Double-A Binghamton.

Corey Oswalt is ranked 29th on the Mets top 30 prospects list. He is projected to reach the majors next season and Oswalt was just named Eastern League Pitcher of the Year. His record was 12-5 with a 2.28 ERA. In 134.1 innings pitched, he has given up 40 walks and struck out 119 batters. Oswalt pitched the entire season with Binghamton (Double-A).

Zack Wheeler has been consistently hurt year in and out for the Mets. However, maybe he could use a fresh start. Wheeler’s record this season with the Mets was 3-7 with a 5.21 ERA. In 86.1 innings pitched, he has walked 40 batters and struck out 81 batters.┬áThis would be a good trade for both sides if the Orioles decide to go in this direction.
