With just a little bit under 24 hours to go before the trade deadline, the New England Patriots and the San Francisco 49ers pulled off a shocking trade. New England sends backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo to the 49ers for a second round draft pick.
He will be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season. The Patriots didn’t want to lose him for nothing and the 49ers needed a quarterback in the worst way. 49ers general manager John Lynch knows what he is doing despite his team being 0-8 this season.
Brian Hoyer and C.J. Beathard is not the answer at quarterback for the 49ers long term. Since Garoppolo is only 25 years old, maybe the 49ers can sign him to a long term deal. I would anticipate that the 49ers would sign him when the season is over. He can do wonders with head coach Kyle Shanahan.
In Garoppolo’s career so far, he has completed 63-of-94 passes for 690 yards and 5 touchdowns. He has all the tools to be a franchise quarterback in the NFL. Garoppolo was drafted in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft from Eastern Illinois.
It is surprising the Patriots made a move like this because they traded Jacoby Brissett to the Indianapolis Colts before the season began.
This must mean that the New England Patriots are sold on Tom Brady playing at least for the next three to four seasons. The question is now, who will be the backup quarterback for New England? It is very possible the 49ers release Brian Hoyer and the Patriots sign him to be the backup. Colin Kaepernick should be brought in but he won’t.
If Tom Brady gets injured, they will be in big time trouble. New England is rolling the dice big time with this move. This also means that Garoppolo didn’t want to sit behind Brady and Garoppolo is already ready to be a starter in this league.
