J.T. Miller OT Goal Lifts Rangers Over Sabres in 10th Winter Classic

A hockey rink is set up on the infield at Citi Field in New York on Sunday, Dec. 31, 2017. The Buffalo Sabres play the New York Rangers on Monday in the NHL's New Year's Day game. Both teams practiced on the ice with the temperature around 16 degrees, the same as is forecast for the start of the game on Monday.

The New York Rangers and the Buffalo Sabres faced off in the 10th annual NHL Winter Classic on New Year’s Day. It was a sunny, cold, and windy day at Citi Field home of the New York Mets. J.T. Miller scored off a rebound on a shot by Kevin Shattenkirk with 2:43 into overtime as the Rangers defeated the Sabres 3-2.

Paul Carey and Michael Grabner scored goals for the Rangers in the first period. Sam Reinhart scored a power-play goal in the second-period for the Sabres. Rasmus Ristolainen tied the game :27 seconds into the third period.

In the third period, teams traded sides at the 10-minute mark because of the conditions. The same was done in overtime. At the 2:30 mark of overtime, teams switched sides.

Henrik Lundqvist made 31 saves for the Rangers. Lundqvist is now 4-0 in his career when playing outdoor games. His last came on January 29, 2014, in a 2-1 win against the New York Islanders.  Robin Lehner made 39 saves for the Sabres. These two teams will play each other two more times this season.
