Sri Lanka has gotten so much better in their batting after losing their first match to Afghanistan very badly. But tonight at Sharjah, they recorded their highest successful run chase against Afghanistan in T20s by beating them with 4 wickets in the Asia Cup 2022 Super Four stage. Here’s how it went;
Sri Lanka Beat Afghanistan by 4 Wickets
Winning the toss and opting to bowl first, Sri Lanka succeeded in scalping the dangerous Hazratullah Zazai within powerplay. But his form was continued by Rahmatullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran, who together added 93 runs in 11 overs to the second wicket.
Gurbaz, especially, seemed to score his maiden century but was caught in the end. Yet, Ibrahim continued with Najibullah and others to help Afghanistan cross the 170 mark. Well, all the pace that Afghanistan carried since the beginning was controlled effectively by Sri Lanka in the death overs, as they conceded only 37 runs in the last five overs.

And with a target of 176 runs, Sri Lanka made the best start in months – adding 62 runs in 6.3 overs before Kusal Mendis departed for a brilliant knock. Yet, this didn’t disturb the flow of runs. The other opener – Pathum Nissanka, partnered with other batsmen to maintain the steady rate of required run rate and almost got his team home.
But with Afghanistan spinners tackling them cleverly, they slowed a bit. Yet, Bhanuka Rajapaksa and Hasaranga did the rest job to take Sri Lanka home. They chased down the 176-run target in a fashion, with five balls and four wickets in hand.
With this, Sri Lanka has just bettered their chances for the Asia Cup final, coming next week. Meanwhile, both Afghanistan and Sri Lanka have two matches each payable against India and Pakistan.
