The Los Angeles Chargers defeated the New York Jets 14-7 in a game the Chargers need to win in order to keep their playoff hopes alive. Phillip Rivers threw a 3-yard touchdown pass to Antonio Gates in the second quarter. Gates finished with six receptions for 81 yards and a touchdown. Rivers completed 22-of-40 passes for 290 yards and a touchdown.
In the third quarter, Bilal Powell scored on a 57-yard touchdown run for the Jets. Powell finished with 145 rushing yards on 19 carries and a touchdown. Melvin Gordon scored on a 1-yard touchdown run later in the third for the Chargers. Gordon rushed for 81 yards on 19 carries and a touchdown. He also caught three passes for 47 yards receiving.
The Jets had chances in the fourth, but couldn’t convert. Bryce Petty completed 15-of-28 passes for 119 yards and one interception. The Jets leading receiver was Robby Anderson with five receptions for 51 yards.
Los Angeles’s defense had three sacks, one forced fumble, and one interception by Keenan Allen at the end of the first half. The Chargers will host the Oakland Raiders (6-8) in the season finale next week. Los Angeles will make it to the playoffs with a win and some help. New York will be on the road against the New England Patriots (12-3) in their season finale next week.
